There is a lot of content out there telling you which card is the best, which redemption is optimal, and which strategy every serious traveler should be following. Some of it is useful. But it can also create the impression that there is one right answer everyone should be chasing.
There is not. And understanding that changes how you approach this whole thing.

Why "You Do You" Is Actually Serious Advice
It sounds casual, but it is one of the more important ideas in this space. There is no universal roadmap for points and miles. Every person reading this is at a different stage, with a different budget, different travel goals, and a different idea of what a great trip looks like.
A ranked list of the best redemptions assumes everyone is optimizing for the same outcome. But some people want to fly six family members to the beach for spring break. Others want a solo business class experience they would never otherwise afford. Others want to stretch their points as far as possible over many smaller trips. All of those are legitimate goals. None of them are wrong.
✏️ MAX’S TAKE This is the thing I feel most strongly about in this whole space. I have seen people feel like they failed because they did not redeem their points for maximum CPP. But they got their family to a trip they could not have afforded otherwise. That is not failure. That is the whole point of this. Play the game in a way that fits your life.
What "Optimal" Actually Means
In the points world, “optimal” usually means high cents per point. And that is a fair benchmark when you are comparing two similar redemptions.
But here is the question worth asking: optimal for whom?
If a business class flight to Europe is priced at $6,000 and you would never actually pay that, booking it with points at 4 cents per point is not really saving you $6,000. You are saving the difference between what you would have spent and the fees you pay on an award booking.
Free is free. A redemption that gets you somewhere you genuinely wanted to go, at a price you would not have otherwise paid, is a good redemption. The math is just context.

Programs update their award charts. Transfer partners shift. Redemption sweet spots that existed two years ago sometimes disappear. The people who do well long-term are the ones who stay curious and adaptable, not the ones who locked in one strategy and never revisited it.
That is part of what makes this interesting. It is not a static puzzle with one solution. It is an evolving game that rewards people who pay attention and adjust.

The joy here is in finding the version of this game that works for your life. Not the version that scores highest on a points blog. If someone else’s strategy does not match your goals, that is fine. Figure out what you actually want from travel, and work backward from there.
